HISTORY

It doesn’t take more than a look to understand that the 2002 Turbo is a special car. Behind its cute looks and its iconic war colours is one of the holy grails of BMW, a true performance car which was able to achieve a 0 to 100 time of under seven seconds, with a maximum top speed of over 200 km/h, and all of this, in 1973!

The 2002 Turbo was BMW’s first attempt at building a turbocharged production car. The specs were mouth-watering: a KK&K turbocharger with a compression ratio of 6.9:1 brought the 2002 tii engine to 170 PS at 5,800 rpm, with a 240 Nm of torque, and a feather weight of 1080 kg. The 2002 Turbo was quick, very quick. It’s a shame that its birth happened at the wrong time. Its unveiling at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show happened just before the oil crisis, an unfortunate timing for a sportscar. The 2002 Turbo adventure was short lived and only 1,672 cars left the Bavarian factory. This didn’t hinder the 2002 Turbo from becoming an icon, especially with its unique stripes and the “2002 Turbo” lettering, which was applied in reverse on the front bumper to signalise to the car in front to move over. The writing was judged to encourage aggressive driving and therefore not applied on the car at the time of delivery. The owner was then free of applying the decals which came with the car.

OUR 2002 TURBO

Our example is chassis number 4290372 and was delivered new in the colour of BMW Chamonix White, one of the two tones officially offered on the 2002 Turbo. It sports a black roof lining, which is believed to have been a very rare option on the model. The last German owner spent in the tens of thousands of Euros in new parts from BMW years ago, all of which can be traced thanks to the many invoices that come with the car. As of now, many of these parts aren’t available new anymore. The car was completely restored in his garage, from bare metal, with passion and dedication, using original and genuine parts in the process, and was finally ready to hit the road again a few weeks ago. Some of the parts were conserved and refurbished, such as the carpets and the door lining, which are original to this example.

The owner, a perfectionist and BMW enthusiast, talked us through the process of restoring the car. His attention to detail left no stone unturned in making this car the perfect example, and exactly as it left the factory in 1974. Small details such as the red antenna top, the door gaps of 5.5 mm, the front wheel arches which, together with the front piece and as intended by BMW, make one single piece. The wheels were finished in the original anthracite colour, and as the owner cites, with 60% gloss. The radio is original and is in full working condition. The car is equipped with the reliable 4-speed transmission, new brakes and callipers, original spoiler, original wheel arch extensions, original turbocharger with the KK&K plate, and improved Bilstein suspension.

The condition is exceptional and the car drives and feels as if it just left the assembly line. Truly a unique opportunity to acquire a piece of Bavarian history, and one of the most iconic German sportscars. The originality of the parts which constitute this build make it one of the most original and genuine BMW 2002 Turbo on the market.
