Many great cars were born out of racing, be it a homologation special, or a halo car made with all the knowledge and synergies gained during competition. In the case of McLaren and Mercedes-Benz, their long and fruitful relationship in Formula One, spanning from 1995 to 2009, couldn’t go in vain. Of course, their joint efforts were great assets in manufacturing terrific racecars, which won them the 1998, 1999, and the 2008 Formula One World Championships. As a celebration of this adventure, Mercedes-Benz and McLaren decided to join forces outside of the racetrack, this time building one of the greatest hypercars and GT’s ever made. The SLR (for Sport Leicht Rennsport) was born in November 2003, and constituted, together with the Porsche Carrera GT and Ferrari Enzo, the holy trinity of the early 2000’s.
It wasn’t until four years later, in 2007, that the open-top version was introduced. Featuring the same supercharged V8 powerplant with endless torque, the Roadster was built for two years only and only 670 examples were ever made. The Roadster was, just like its coupe sibling, built at the McLaren factory in Woking, England. The monocoque was constructed of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic, nodding to the model’s racing provenance, and the interior was equipped with comfortable carbon fibre bucket seats.

OUR EXAMPLE
Our SLR comes with a full documentation, such as the option list, the new car invoice, correspondences with Mercedes, service invoices, as well as the whole collection of literature accompanying the car from new, such as the SLR Book, the SLR Club prospect, and even an SLR key chain with the respective chassis number impregnated on. The car’s original German title shows only one owner from new, and both keys as well as the original battery charger are part of the sale.
Compared to its rivals from Ferrari and Porsche, the McLaren SLR is still a well-kept secret that is patiently lurking at the back of the hypercar lineup waiting to appreciate in value, which it certainly will once people start looking for rare pristine examples. After all, it is a car that had an important role in shaping the modern hypercar, thanks to its carbon fiber construction, its clever aerodynamics, as well as its refinement.
