Like every year, collectors from all around the world prepare for THE European event of the year. Cars get polished, documents are collected and arranged in leather folders, history files are written, and clothes and tuxedos are being tailored for the event, which goes on for two days. The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is by far the most prestigious event in Europe. This year’s edition included some appearances from the 90’s in the form of a Nissan R390 GT1, and even from the early 2000’s with the Maserati MC12. This year’s event was a bit different from what it used to be, as for the first time, there won’t be a public day at Villa Erba, and therefore the cars wouldn’t be seen driving from Villa d’Este to Villa Erba on Sunday morning. Instead, the cars stayed in Villa d’Este, while Villa Erba hosted BMW’s cars and coffee event.

The Concorso is an event we wouldn’t miss for the world, be it for the quality of the cars present at the venue and their rarity, for the interesting people we can meet there, or just in general, for it being another opportunity to visit Italy. For Schaltkulisse though, this year’s edition was a great opportunity to catch up with friends, and get updated on some of the cars we sold in the past. Present were two of the cars we were fortunate to sell over the last few months, a Porsche 959 Sport we sourced and sold together with our friends from Weekend Heroes, and a Ferrari 400 Superamerica LWB Aerodinamico that was kept in a collection for 50 years.

The 959 Sport was an exceptional example of the icon from Stuttgart. Having covered 500 miles from new, being in its original immaculate paint from factory, and still wearing its new car smell, there is no doubt that this is by far the best preserved 959 Sport in the world. The level of originality and preservation was such that it earned the “rolling laboratory” a best in class award.

On the other hand, the 400 Superamerica had significantly changed since the last time we saw it at our Munich facility. It started life silver, only to be repainted bright red shortly after being featured in the Italian movie “il Tigre”, in English “The tiger and the pussycat”, starring Vittorio Gassman. The magicians at Auto Toni in Maranello had the car in their workshops for the past few months. Not only did they freshen up some of the details on the car, they repainted the car Rosso Cina, a dark  red, almost maroon. A shade of color that is rarely seen nowadays and that the owner loved as he had it on one of his classic Ferrari’s back in the day. The Superamerica looked absolutely fantastic. Rosso Cina on the Cuio leather interior looked the part, elegant, stylish, and although not the original specification, definitely a concours worthy participant. The other entrants were fierce rivals, with the one of two Ferrari 365 P Berlinetta Speciale Tre Posti, a magnificent Verde Scuro Ferrari 275 GTB/4, and a rare 250 GT Zagato with its iconic double bubble roof.

This year’s edition reminded us again why Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is such a name in the car world. We find ourselves already looking forward to next year’s event, the countdown starts. Only 360 days to go…
